Gifts to take back from the Local Goan Souvenirs

Gifts and souvenirs make up wonderful keepsakes of travel visits. This section brings together unique, customized souvenirs made by enterprising locals whose work is largely home based so one will not find such souvenirs in the shops. Very typical Goan crafts available in the local markets are also highlighted.

Keepsakes by Cooj

The Poder (The Baker) is one of the existing traditional occupations in Goa. The baker is often seen hooting his way to every house on his bicycle, selling bread from a huge basket. Our art work is created from recycled or donated items. The intricate details on this piece have been sculpted with epoxy clay on ceramic saucers.  It has been manually designed by individuals with psychological difficulties of COOJ Mental Health Foundation. Through vocational therapy, they are trained under the supervision of trained professionals. Sale of their work supplements not just their income but independence and self confidence

My name is Fabiola Tavares, I mainly take orders for custom made items such as hand embroidered wall hangings, embroidered and crocheted newborn clothing, table runners, bed spreads, customized face masks and so on. I use fabric and thread just as a painter uses canvas and paint.

Tony Luis

I make cold process bath soaps as a hobby. The ingredients used are coconut oil, olive oil and palm oil because they complement each other well. The chemical reaction that occurs when the oils exchange molecules create new soap molecules. Then I cure the bars for around 40 days before use. It has simple ingredients that are easy to work with and are perfect for everyday use.

Gold and silver jewelry

One of the best craftsmanship in jewelry will undoubtedly go to the local Goan goldsmiths and silversmiths. Like in the rest of the country, investment in gold and purchase of gold jewelry runs high in the local population. Hence one will find a number of goldsmiths and silversmiths still hand crafting jewelry the old way. Though the number has declined there is still a demand for their services and they can be quite busy during certain season times of weddings and festivals. Since they handcraft, the order for customized jewelry will take time to deliver depending on the intricacy.

Antique Crockery

Antique tableware having intricate designs are a remanent of the past colonial rule.  While many understand that the typical blue and white crockery are antique, some of these are recent pieces from Macau or even China. However, they do look nice. To pick up antique crockery, used now as décor pieces, there are very few shops that deal in buying and selling such crockery  at the Mapusa market and Panjim city as I am aware of. New age ceramics with contemporary designs and Goan themes are available in boutique shops. Antique crockery is affordable piece of old time Goa.

Antique Furniture

Gorgeous colonial dark wooden furniture with intricate carvings are a given for antique furniture.  Budget permitting,  investment in (pricey) antique furniture (much in demand) can be considered. Such purchases will last for generations, provided you pick them prudently as there are establishments that actually make new furniture that are made to look antique for a lesser price. The best bargain would be to buy directly from household that sell their antique furniture. Towards Calangute and Colva, one can pick up  at roadside shops,  depilated but genuine antique furniture that can be repaired at leisure for an economical price.

The Local Bamboo Products

The coconut tree and the bamboo form a large part of any Goan lifestyle. Local vendors sell flowers, fish and bread in bamboo baskets. Such bamboo items can be picked up from local or weekly markets. In the past, the Mahar community from Canacona were involved in making bamboo craft. The practice of this craft is on the decline due to the Mahar community being dispersed into other occupations, besides lack of raw material and use of cheap plastic now.  However, with eco-friendly products becoming popular the demand for bamboo craft may see a hopeful revival.

Goan Music and Tiatr
CDs/DVDs

Music is the soul of Goan social life. Live music, original songs of satire on the Konkani tiatr stage, Portuguese music, dance and the Fado are part of the cultural scene. A generation of older Goans expatriates from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Mozambique have brought musical Swahili sentiments home. Chris Perry and Lorna are legends of popular Konkani music. CDs of local bands, CDs/DVDs of tiatr that are locally produced make a good souvenirs specially for older generation of Goans living elsewhere.  However, if in Goa, one must experience the vibe of the live tiatr, atleast once.
