Museum of Goa (MOG) at Bardez

The Museum of Goa (MOG) is the brain child of Dr. Subodh Kerkar. Dr. Kerker’s installations at the International Film Festival of India, Panaji, would never fail to catch my attention each year. The lighting effects in the dark would enhance the simplest of everyday material into pieces of beauty.

One installation in particular, of recycled plastic bottles put into a wall of wonderful colours really pushed me to visit his Museum of Goa, aptly called MOG at the Pilerne Industrial Estate. Mog in Konkani, the local Goan language also means love, and a visit to the museum endorses Dr. Kerker’ slove for Art so much that this former medical doctor reset his purpose in life.

Armed with my intention to introduce myself and my girls to Art, we entered MOG only to get much more than that.  We received lessons in history, relooked at the beauty in cast aways and even bits of science behind certain installations. Spread indoors and out, and at different levels, every display was interesting. Very intriguing was a canvas that used a single strand of human hair as a medium.

Life in the past is aptly captured in a display of old photographs of the typical local Goan lifestyle of the by gone years. There is a series of photographs on the beach with men in different formations shot in a wide format that is quite captivating even to the untrained eye. Do take the time to watch a short video that plays in a loop, on the ground floor that also houses a gift shop. This Goan museum is certain to have you leave the place upgraded with knowledge.
