Hush of the Mayem Lake accompanied by the rush of Bungee Jumping
The serenity of Mayem Lake see-saws with the thrill of Bungee jumping. In comparison to the sun, sand and shores areas of Goa, perhaps Bicholim will not really be on the list of must visit places in Goa being more in the hinterland. Nonetheless Mayem lake has been one of the first planned and developed spots of attraction in Goa that served local Goans for their picnics as well as the tourists.
Quite a ride away, the journey is enjoyable through and through with the green landscape that passes you. However, the devastating effects of mining, once the backbone of economy of Goa can also be seen in the landscape. Efforts have been made to safeguard the attraction of Mayem Lake, an area of 13000 odd square meters that includes the lake also. The Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) had undertaken extensive renovation at the site which now includes upgraded facilities such as a mini park which allows for viewing of the lake, boat riding, play area for children, cafeteria and washrooms. Sipping coffee at the lake front is ideal for those who don’t really want to venture around but have nonetheless made a pitstop here.
Don’t expect to see fine dining options here. Even the eateries and shops selling souvenirs around are quite basic and rustic in nature but enough to get you by. There is a GTDC run resort which perhaps is the only resort facility for the lake area as far as I know. The most recent pull has been the Bungee Jumping installation by Jumpin Heights. Set at around 55 meters, those seeking the thrill can freefall right unto the lake. At completing more than 10 years and 1,00,000 jumps, Jumpin Heights does follow the highest safety protocol for those wanting to attempt their first jump. As an option, at a price, your dive can be captured as a video for the Instagram reel. Or just a keepsake.
