Abu Dhabi for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

There is absolutely nothing that comes close to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in Abu Dhabi (the Louvre Abu Dhabi requires another dedicated post which will be posted  later). The grandiose of this Mosque has many boastful elements to it. The largest mosque in Abu Dhabi, and one of the largest in the world. Largest carpet, largest chandeliers, largest mosaic in the courtyard. The architectural opulence it generates, makes it seem to be like the Taj Mahal of the future.

With the Abaya over me and having missed the timing of free guided tour, I did the next best thing. The self-guided audio set allows one to discover the different facets of the mosque at your own pace. The entire project if one listens to the commentary, appears to be almost a community project of a different level altogether. Architects, artisans, materials, calligraphy styles have come from across countries and cultures. The Mosque welcomes people of all faiths. The dress code is very strict and should be respected. If one has a long layover in Abu Dhabi, it is worth it to step out of the airport to just visit this landmark of the world.
